Saw the bad reviews of Sheraton and Plantation in Mactan (and bad reviews for the other hotels in Mactan on tripadvisor.com). How about Hoyohoy Villas ( http://www.hoyohoyvillas.com ) in Bantayan Island? Anything similar to that? Or perhaps closer on Cebu Island? Basically looking for a nice villa/cottage on the beach where I can relax for a few days in mid-Feb.. Thanks!
Your best bet quality-wise is the Shangrila Mactan. You have to be savvy or fortunate to get a less than 100 dollar a night rate though.

well, i'm from the philippines, and i've witnessed some of these locations first hand. i highly recommend going to Boracay. you can do everything there… from para-skiing, to snorkelling. the white sands of Boracay are unparalleled in my opinion. the night life there is equally fantastic. you can go island hopping over there to a neighboring island called Puka Beach, where you can also go snorkelling and collect rare sea shells. the sands of Puka Beach are a mixture of the native white sands and small fine sea shells.
if you're curious also about the beaches of Cebu, i can refer you to a friend of mine who's gone island hopping all over Cebu. i think she's quite familiar with Malapascua Island as well.
